Mark 6:14-16: Herod Antipas’ Mistaken Identification of Jesus
Passage:
14 And King Herod heard [of it], for His name had become well known; and [people] were saying, “John the Baptist has risen from the dead, and that is why these miraculous powers are at work in Him.” 15 But others were saying, “He is Elijah.” And others were saying, “[He is] a prophet, like one of the prophets [of old].” [John the Baptist is imprisoned, beheaded, and buried 16 But when Herod heard [of it], he kept saying, “John, whom I beheaded, has risen!”
Why did Herod think Jesus was John the Baptist?
Herod Antipas had ordered the execution of John the Baptist (Mark 6:17-29). After hearing about Jesus’ miracles and growing influence, Herod’s guilty conscience troubled him. He feared that John had come back from the dead.
Proverbs 28:1-” The wicked flee when no one is pursuing, But the righteous are bold as a lion.”
Herod’s fear shows how guilt can affect a person’s thinking.

Herod’s mistake reminds us that it is not enough to know about Jesus. We must know who He truly is. Many people had opinions about Jesus, but only those who recognized Him as the Messiah and Son of God understood His true identity and mission. As Jesus later asked His disciples:
“But what about you? Who do you say I am?” (Mark 8:29)
That remains the most important question for every believer /disciple today.
